SEREMBAN — Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) confirms that a black panther was spotted at its Kuala Pilah campus after a photograph of the animal roaming in an area resembling a covered car park went viral.
UiTM Kuala Pilah corporate communications unit head Mumtaz Ahmad said the incident happened at around 7pm Wednesday (July 22).
“The picture was taken by a university staff member who was still around at the time.
“We immediately contacted the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) and they have been assisting us to capture the animal in case it returns,” she said when contacted Friday (July 24).
She said students were still not back on campus due to the recovery movement control order (MCO).
Mumtaz said this was the first time a black panther has been spotted inside its campus since the university moved to its current location in 2009.
She said as a safety measure, Perhilitan personnel will continue to visit the campus on a regular basis.
The university is surrounded by dense forest which is home to wildlife such as panthers, leopards, tapir and sunbears.
